Pitt Lacrosse 2019 Preview

Jan. 8, 2019

The University of Pittsburgh Women's Club lacrosse team offiicially kicked off their Spring 2019 season last night with their first practice of the year!! The team is excited to get to work prepping and getting everything ready for the start of competition.

The Panthers will open their season with scrimmages at the Pitt Sports Dome on February 3rd, 10:30 AM vs Edinboro (NCAA D2, PSAC) and 12:30 PM vs IUP (NCAA D2, PSAC) and another Sunday of scrimmages on February 10th, 10:30 AM vs Ursuline College (NCAA D2, GMAC) and 12:30 PM vs Slippery Rock (NCAA D2, PSAC). After the two weekends of scrimmages they will travel to the Golden State Invitational to begin WCLA play against Santa Clara (Feb 15, 8 PM), UCLA (Feb 16, 12 PM), Georgia (Feb 16, 6 PM), and Cal Poly (Feb 17, 10 AM) with all games being played on UCLA's campus rec fields.

After the West Coast trip, the Panthers will host their in conference foes Ohio University (Feb 23, 2 PM), University of Buffalo (Feb 23, 6 PM), and West Virginia University (Feb 24, 9 AM). Before taking a brief hiatus for Spring Break. The Pittsburgh Invitational will then bring action against Penn State University (Mar 22, 8 PM), Notre Dame (March 23, 10 AM), and Boston College (March 23, 6 PM). The Panthers will then close out their regular season with cross town games at neighbor and WCLA Div 2 team Carnegie Mellon University (April 3, 7 PM) and at home against Duquesne University Club (April 5, 8 PM).

This season the team is looking to make another run deep into the WCLL conference tournament, where they have made it to the championship game 8 consecutive years and won 4 conference champsionships, and hopefully making it to the WCLA National tournament which will be held in Virginia Beach, VA.

The team is captained by Seniors Hannah Kendrick, Maddie Johnson, and Alex Werbitsky who look to make their mark on the program along with the 9 other Seniors on the team. The defense will be anchored by Senior goalkeeper Katie Honebrink (2018 WCLA 2nd Team All-American) who is supported by returning Junior starters Jules Lynch (2018 WCLA 2nd Team All-American), Emily Nutter, and Mara Wrzeniewski. The offense looks to maintain its goal scoring ways and increase production with a lot of experience at the midfield, expect another great year from Juniors Megan Lynch (2018 WCLA 2nd Team All-American) and Alicia Reuscher both of whom had over 30 points last season. Don't sleep on the low attack though as Sophomore assist leader Allison Macrae led the team with 38 points last season. As always Pitt will look for production from some new players and for other returners to step-up into roles vacated by the loss of their tight knit 2018 Senior class so expect big things from this BIG roster.
